Within the last few months I’ve become a huge fan of running skirts/skorts. I only own one and it’s an off-brand that I got at my local Kohl’s. Nonetheless, it’s so comfortable! I used to wear fitted running capri’s (I have like, a bagillion pairs of black tight work out capris!! Ugh!) but now that it’s uber-hot and I am running outside, it’s time for something better
I’ve been wearing my running skirt a lot and I love it! Here are the perks:
- It’s longer than most running shorts so it offers more coverage/hides the top-of-the-leg mushy look that tight shorts often make worse
- I have the freedom of small running shorts underneath which eliminates chaffing (some shorts do not have underwear liners like the Nike Tempo shorts do)
- Slightly cooler, as air flies up everywhere and tends to cool your legs down
- Same inside pockets (on my skirt, at least!) to hold iPod (not that I have one) or keys
- A nice change & looks like more fun!
Even if my reasons are mostly outweighed by the ONE main reason: I feel cuter when I run, then so what! Running makes you feel amazing; you sweat, have adrenaline, feel like you are accomplishing something, you can really feel your strength and all that. So what if you want to look like you feel? I’m all for it
Other work out clothes that I looove are Empire waist-ed work out tops:
I was actually toying with the idea of buying the tank above from Sport’s Authority in two different colors but was hesitant because I really like the tanks I have now (even though they are old, ratty, and need to gooo!). Then, weirdly enough, SR did a post about hers. I didn’t even know she had it! Guess it was a sign for me to snatch both the black and hot pink ones up, huh?
I can’t wait to try them out.
As far as making sure you wear something that isn’t going to make you feel worse or have a worse work out, here are some random tips I’ve read from various women’s health & running magazines:
- Avoid fabrics that don’t breathe. Never wear clothing made out of rubber-based or plastic-based materials because they keep your sweat from evaporating, thus keeping your body temperature too high! Cotton is the most breathable!
- Pick clothes that fit. Be realistic. Wearing work out clothes that are too tight can cause chaffing and make it hard for your skin to breathe. Clothes that fit right are the best for your body!
- For sports bras, look for ones that encapsulate each boob in a separate chamber because this reduces bounce and support better than simple shelf bras. I know this is important for me!
- Make sure you can move! If your arms are constricted by tight sleeves, you will enjoy your work out far less! Heck, you probably won’t even be able to do your work out! Fit is key!
- Get a new pair of running shoes every 300 to 500 miles that you run. Once your shoes lose tread they stop absorbing shock and guess what takes its place? Your body! Updating your running shoes for every day runners is beyond important.
- Have a cardio shoe and a running shoe. A lot of times people use the same shoes to lift weights, mow the lawn, and go running. But each shoe has something different to help you, so check out getting a walking shoe or something along those lines for your other activities.

Now that I’ve told you what I like (tanks and skirts), what clothes do YOU like to work out in?
