The ‘Something Borrowed’ Cast is Not What I Wanted! :(

kate and ginnifer

Last June I went out one evening after Matt had fallen asleep and I bought Emily Giffin’s Something Borrowed. I read it in two days. After that I went to Target and bought Something Blue, Baby Proof, and Love The One You’re With. She has become one of my favorite authors. And now I’m anxious to read Heart of the Matter.

SOOO….. when I read on Emily’s Facebook that Hilary Swank & her production company picked up Something Borrowed and planned to turn it into a romcom, I was SO happy. I love that book. I relate to Rachel White (main character) in so many ways and I love Emily’s writing style. In addition, the romantic aspect of that book is really, really sweet.

THEN casting was released. I was devastated. One of the central characters is a 29-year-old female named Darcy. She is tall, very thin and toned, with olive-tanned skin, long beautiful dark hair and bright green eyes. She is one of those girls who always looks perfect and skinny, no matter what. A big majority of what made Darcy who she was in the book(s) were her stunning looks. After I finished the books(s) I really had a set vision of what she looked like, as well as a set vision of the other main characters like Rachel, Dex, Marcus, Hillary, Ethan and Claire.

AND THEN… They cast KATE HUDSON as Darcy. A short, no-boob, not exotic or “natural beauty” looking girl. I was disappointed, to say the least. And Rachel? Described in the book as a plain-jane, “J. Crew” model looking, slightly-shorter-than Darcy-with-bigger-boobs-but-still-wears-little-make-up-and-has-sandy -blonde-hair type? Ginnifer Goodwin. Now, don’t get me wrong, I love her on Big Love. And she isn’t all wrong for the part, just not what I pictured. And I hate that they’ve turned the desirable, sexy part of Darcy from brunette to blonde. And then the lesser-beauty to a shorter brunette. That’s not always the case in real life, people! I don’t know. I guess I was just really expecting them to stay true to the book when it came down to physical descriptions of the characters. The main male lead, Dexter, was cast nearly down to a tee regarding matching the physical description in the book with the person they cast. I would’ve made him taller, but at least he’s got the dark hair, olive skin, and green eyes.

I’m waiting for the movie to get done filming and then for it to come out. The last two nights I re-read the book and it’s so great. It’s a great book about love and friendship. BUT THEY CAST DARCY ALL WRONG! Kate Hudson will not make a good Darcy, I am telling you! They chose John Krasinski (Jim from The Office) for Ethan, which is a great choice and I love him. He will make a really great male lead for the Something Blue movie, since Ethan is a main character in that book but only a peripheral character in Something Borrowed. So I at least have that to look forward to. BUT (spoiler alert) Ethan eventually turns into Darcy’s love interest in the 2nd book and I really just don’t think Kate Hudson and John Krasinski look like they could 1. be a couple or 2. have any chemistry at all! So we’ll see about how that pans out… STILL I cannot get over the shitty choice for Darcy! You can check out the rest of the cast here if you’re interested :)

Has anyone else read the book/agree with the casting??

**UPDATE**

dex

Colin Eggelsfield is playing the role of Dex (Dexter Thaler). Apparently he was someone on the new 90210 series before it got canned. I’ve never seen him act, so I can’t say if he sucks or not I just hope he’s GREAT. I guess he works as Dex, but honestly he better grow his hair out a little more, and he better READ THE BOOK not just the script! That way he knows how to be Dex. It’s important that Dex isn’t played too smooth, because he really isn’t. Okay, enough about that :) Just thought I’d share with you.

So I just saw this update… I love Colin!! He was on All My Children & I must say, he played a good bad boy / pretty boy!! & he's GREAT on the eyes too!

  • Shelby Stidham

LOL he is pretty handsome!! Ok so being on a soap means he's capable to play the mysterious romantic guy that he is in the book!!

    You gotta read this book!!

[...] John Krasinski, and more hot celebs. Anyway, I’ve referenced Emily and her amazing books here, here, here, here, and here. Last night I commented on her Facebook status when she posted a [...]

Colin Eggelsfield was in Melrose place I believe. It is the show that got canned. 90210 is still running and he is definitely not on that show.

As for Kate Hudson…..I can see her being the part attitude wise (I think because I have bride wars in my head), but looks wise she just isnt right. I havent read Something Blue yet so I am just basing that on Something Borrowed.

I agree, Kate Hudson is a horrible choice for Darcy. Ginnifer Goodwin is a so-so choice for Rachel, but Rachel is supposed to be more mousey and plain. Not ugly, just not flashy.

  • LadyS

I couldn’t agree more!! I read something borrowed in one day, and decided to wait to see the cast. I was so disappointed. They didn’t cast Hillary or the Jose the doorman at all, Hillary was one of my very favorite characters, oh, I forgot about Julian too. I have read books and been disappointed somewhat in the casting, but this one I won’t bother to see. Kate Hudson as Darcy?? I think the only one who really fits somewhat is Dex.. And where is Annalise?? Why bother turning a book into a movie if you’re going to leave out main characters? It is so disappointing for those who buy the books. How could they completely take out Hillary??? Kate Hudson and no Hillary, not worth seeing :-(

  • Lady

Someone asked when did Ethan go to the Hamptons??? He didn’t Ethan was in London !! And they decided not to cast any of those characters either. This screen adaptation is bad before it’s even seen!!

  • E. RaMona

I completely agree! I just finished the book and was looking forward to the movie. From what I can tell, they combined the Hilary character with Ethan’s…that’s how he ends up in the Hamptons. I may wait for this to come out on dvd.

You’re dead on about Hudson. She can be bitchy but that’s an actresses job. As far as looks, the casting is ALL wrong. I’m beyond disappointed :(

  • http://www.shelbystidham.com Shelby Stidham

Thanks, Melissa!nnI am so hugely disappointed ALSO that they chose Kate Hudson. It seriously turned me off to seeing the movie in theaters. ALL WRONG. SO VERY WRONG. :( nnEthan wasn’t in the Hamptons but I’m guessing since Ethan & Darcy are a couple in the second book, they are introducing him early in hopes to get people hooked into wanting to see the second film, which I’m sure they’ll make.nnI like John Krasinski so I’m letting the discrepancies with Ethan’s whereabouts slide ;)

EJM–agree with you about Ginnifer! Kate is horrible. I’m so pissed!

  • http://www.shelbystidham.com Shelby Stidham

    Sadly, I agree!

  • http://www.shelbystidham.com Shelby Stidham

I’m waiting for it to be free on Netflix. I’m so annoyed that they chose Kate Hudson! Nothing against HER but she’s NOT Darcy!

  • E. EaMona

Idina Menzel could’ve been a great Darcy, IMO

  • Marty9393

I totally agree about the casting. It was backwards from the book. The two female leads should have switched parts.

    *dissapointed much :( *
