Well, this is only a partial display as my books are scattered through various rooms & levels of my house but… day 2 of ‘Something Material I Love Week’ is my books!
Being an English major when I was in college forced me to buy a lot of classic literature novels that I normally would not have purchased. Unfortunately, at the beginning of my education I scanned books for good quotes for papers, read summaries online, and sold the books back. Only the last year of college did I really read the literature, really analyze it and form an opinion about it. Luckily I kept some of my favorites from my last semester of college. My very favorite (which is not pictured because it was downstairs by the couch and yes, I am that lazy) is The Scarlet Letter by Hawthorne. I have this great reader that has all of Hawthorne’s short stories in it, along with The Scarlet Letter, and then a really good selection of critical analysis essays. I had to buy it for a class titled “American Novel” and we spent a lot of time on it. I actually had read a lot of his short stories for different classes so when I had to buy this book, I was actually pretty happy. I really enjoy Hawthorne, and Puritan-era literature.
What IS pictured above is the stuff I have read within the last several months. All 4 of Emily Giffin’s fun novels (that are being made into movies AS WE SPEAK!), Never Let Me Go (weird book with a pretty good twist–although I guessed it) that I would definitely recommend, Atonement (I only just now saw the movie and I must say, it does an amazing job capturing the scenery of the war) by Ian McEwan, which I also highly recommend, and a book of short stories titled Going to Meet the Man. Those are not for something with a soft stomach but they are excellent. Angels and Insects isn’t necessarily a favorite, as it deals with the theme of science and faith, and uses insects for metaphorical comparisons to people and earth, but it was certainly interesting. I read that almost a year ago and then saw the movie on Showtime a couple months ago. Weird seeing it on screen but just what I expected.
Anyway I won’t go into detail about every single book but I will say that my book collection is something–like my shoes–that I want to expand greatly. I love to read and really appreciate a good book.
Also, I apologize for the pictures. I’ve been using my Nexus One a lot because I’ve been doing a lot of photography with my SLR lately and haven’t wanted to clean my card off the big camera. One day this site will be ONLY high quality pictures. One day…
