Post-op Update #3: Slow Movings..

me on couch

Today is Saturday, 3 days after my surgery. Here’s what’s going on:

As you already know, the original pain medicine my doctor gave me just wasn’t working. Shiz, it didn’t even make me sleepy! So after an excruciating night Wednesday night/Thursday morning, they gave me a shot of Demerol in my left thigh to help with the pain immediately. But they also prescribed me a new pain pill in place of the expensive one (very pricey, actually) called Percocet. Actually, I got the off-brand but yeah, it’s percocet. Anyway, I started taking that Thursday. Wow, going from taking a pill that DIDN’T HELP MY PAIN AT ALL to taking a pill THAT HELPS THE PAIN AND MAKES ME SLEEPY!? Truly a little miracle. So I’ve been alternating between taking pain pills and 800 mg ibu profens, taking my antibiotics, my stool softeners and vitamins.

Well, they make you take stool softeners because the pain pills make you constipated. Percocets make you extra constipated, apparently, so now on top of stool softerners, I am taking laxatives, too. I still haven’t gone to the bathroom but if you add up all that I’ve eaten since Wednesday, I’m sure you couldn’t even make three full meals. So while I’m not actually worried about that yet, it’s something I have to keep monitoring. I drank a big Americano this morning with half a bran muffin, so let’s hope that jump starts something :) I know this is kind of gross but I said I’d give all the details!

So on top of keeping an eye on that, I’m trying to really rest and lay low so that I can go back to work on Monday. It’s hard because I get sore and have trouble powering through my soreness because I don’t have that much energy. But I don’t have a lot of energy because my appetite is decreased. The combination of taking a handful of pills twice a day and feeling achy all over really just takes away your hunger for anything. I have been trying to eat more it’s just.. when you don’t feel good, forcing yourself to eat doesn’t sound fun at all!

Something else that is normal but still uncomfortable is that the implants want to float up in my body. I am wearing this big strap over my chest to help push the implants down–and they will naturally go down on their own over the next few weeks–but they still are high up. They look like pecs right now and it looks funny and it feels uncomfortable.

I guess I am at the stage in the healing process where I am still having enough pain and looking weird enough where this hasn’t really “hit me” yet and I can’t enjoy it. But as soon as they start looking good and I start feeling better, the experience will become more enjoyable. And more real.

I am, however, able to sit up and lay down on my own now. It hurts a bit but Matt is no longer working as my fork lift person. I can also get myself to the toilet and do those things. The first night there was no way.

Also a plus is that my range of motion in my arms is coming back, slowly. I am not 100% able to put sweaters on and get the seat belt but it’s getting better.

So that’s all I’ve got for now. I sort of over-did it yesterday so I’m going to lay low today and watch some DVDs on the couch. Maybe take a nap, too :)
