When Matt and I first moved into our house, we had the whole thing gutted. I mean GUTTED. No appliances, no countertops, no floors, nothin’. So needless to say we turned to a microwave for many, many, too many meals. We got really burnt out of freezers meals after 6 months of eating NOTHING fresh. Now that I can cook, we seldom yearn for freezer meals. I always try and keep a couple in the freezer for those nights when I know I’m going to be too pooped to cook. When I went to the store today, I bought 2 Healthy Living single-serving Pepperoni Pizzas. They are 300 calories each and go great with a green salad. Once I got home I started thinking.. “Ok, these are ‘Eating Right’ and relatively low calorie but what freezer meals are actually good for you?“. And so I Googled. And WebMD has come up with a list of the “Top 12 Healthy Frozen Dinners” that I found very interesting! If you’re not in the mood for readin’ a long old article and lookin’ at charts, I broke it down by diversity of meals below:
Chicken: This is one of the BEST ones for you and whatdoyouknow?! It’s main ingredient is the nasty, hated, awful tomato! I have to scratch that off the list but for the rest of yous that love yourself some tomato-goodness, this meal is the one! It packs a powerful 18 grams of protein with just 290 calories and 9 grams of fat. It also has 4 grams of fiber! Pretty fierce for a frozen meal
Vegetarian: This one actually sounds really good to me! It’s got 9 grams of protein, 300 calories, 6 grams of fiber and just 6 grams of fat. It’s a good option for those vegetarians out there.. which isn’t me, but I do love pumpkin & pasta so it sounds good. I usually like Healthy Choice meals because they don’t skimp on size and they last in the freezer much better than Lean Cuisine’s! Buuutt.. I can see how this meal may not be appetizin’ to some of yahs.. So check this one out:
Asian: Another Healthy Choice meal makin’ the list! This one sounds SUPER good because I love Asian food and I love, love, love potstickers! I admit, I’ve never seen this one in the stores I shop at but it must exist! The stats on this little jewel are as follows: 380 calories, 4.5 grams of fat, 6 grams of fiber and 8 grams of protein. Slightly more calories than the first two with a bit less protein, but a good amount of fiber and a creative menu option for those nights when you’re just sick of salads and chicken! Ok, next!
Beef: This one mixes meat, pasta, and veggies and ranks pretty high as far as nutritionals; 320 calories, 5 grams of fat, 3 grams of fiber and 15 grams of protein. That’s pretty high in protein! And if you ask me, that baby looks GOOD! I’d serve it up with some hot edamame soybeans and call it a meal!
There is some more variety in the remaining 8 options, but I decided to go with the “most often” base options; chicken, vegetarian, “ethnic”, and beef. Typically a favorite ethnic meal is Mexican but there aren’t too many freezer meals out there that are 1. Mexican & 2. Healthy!
Some of the other healthier freezer meal options are:
- Kashi Mayan Harvest Bake
- Healthy Choice Cajun Style Chicken and Shrimp
- Kashi Black Bean Mango
- Smart Ones Thai Style Chicken Rice Noodles
- Lean Cuisine Glazed Chicken
- Kashi Ranchero Beans
- Smart Ones Cranberry Turkey Medallions
- Healthy Choice Café Steamer 5 Spice Beef & Vegetable
Question: Have you tried any of these 12 meals and if so, was it good? Did you stay full?
