Strawberry-Topped Bostom Cream Cake at Shelbystidham.com

Strawberry-Topped Bostom Cream Cake

First let me say that all of these photos in this post are mine. Meaning, I took these photos and nommed down on mostly all of these treats. Okay, not most mostly, I tried all of them. Some of them I tried several times (cough, cough.. CUPCAKES..) but today I was on a calorie-researching spree that has so made me cry. And if I am crying knowing the calories of things that tempt me, maybe you can cry with me? And sigh relief that there are some alternatives. Just maybe? :)

The above photo of Strawberry-topped Boston Cream Cake made from the bakery at Safeway is the first culprit. Oh, Strawberries, you’re so healthy. Nevermind you’re dipped in a sugary glaze and are sitting on a soft bed of cream and sugar! Ugh. One slice of cake is on average about 10 oz. Should it be this large? Naa, but it’s America baby and that’s the standard. One slice of this cake is, therefore, 710 calories. If you got a hankerin’ for strawbs, I heard about a double strawberry pie that is good. If it’s cake you’re after, 100 calorie packs of Hostess Cakes might hit the spot!

Domino's Pepperoni and Black Olive Pizza at Shelbystidham.com

Domino's Pepperoni and Black Olive Pizza

325 calories a slice. I mean, I am not surprised at any of these but I still feel secretly disappointed that they aren’t all zero calories with a bajillion grams of protein and vitamins. What can I say, I’m a dreamer. “Eating Right” and “Lean Cuisine” make a mean, single-serving freezer pizza that is just 300 calories. And you get 5 pieces of pepperoni! And they are VERY good! Especially if you add some veggies of your own!

Domino's Ham and Pineapple Pizza at shelbystidham.com

Domino's Ham and Pineapple Pizza

280 calories per slice. This is my favorite kind of pizza; ham & pepperoni. But guess what? You can make your own pizza with more veggies and less bad stuff and have it be healthy! I swear. But if you’re an uber-busy girl (or just simply don’t wanna) there are a lot of good, healthy store-bought options, too.

White cake cupcakes with vanilla white and green frosting at shelbystidham.com

Cupcakes Galore :)

Approximately 150 calories per frosted cupcake. If it’s a cakey-bready dessert you’re after, try VitaTops. They’re only 100 calories and seem to be popular among dieters. I have yet to try them but I always hear good things! Or you could try the Weight Watcher’s Carrot Cake Cupcakes. They’re super good.

Beers, Chips, and Salsa at shelbystidham.com

Beers, Chips, and Salsa

A monster beer of the size above can have up to 175 calories per glass. Those chips and salsa, when split with one other person, can have up to 200 calories. I always drink Budweiser Select 55 because the taste is fine (not great, but I’m also not a beer snob) or a MGD 64. They are good with limes and you can hardly tell the difference between an MGD 64 or a BL Lime. Seriously!

Sopas with Rice and Beans at shelbystidham.com

Sopas with Rice and Beans

Around 200 calories per sopa, these little Mexican-pizza type items are really good. Obviously. And there isn;t really a healthy alternative I don’t think. What I do know is that there are some healthy alternatives on most Mexican food menus, including (but not limited to) Grilled Chicken Salads, Healthy Burritos, Soups, and Fish Tacos (when not cooked in oil!). Good luck on that one :)

Frank's Red Hot Chicken Wings (made by Red Hot Shelby) :)

In 10 hot wings, there can be nearly 1,590 calories! Why? The sauce is made with butter as a base! I think a better alternative would be having grilled chicken and using Frank’s Red Hot Sauce (0 calories) as a topper! Buying wings from a restaurant is always going to equal the high calorie version. Making them at home means you can use the zero calorie sauce or even a lower calorie version of the original. If you ask me, wings (or anything directly off a bone) aren’t worth those many cal’s!

Okay so I knew those all had a slew of calories in them. But I also knew there could be light at the end of the tunnel (i.e. another tasty alternative to the classic). However, when I’m really craving something I usually just have a little bit of it.

What about you guys: have a small portion of the original or try the healthier alternative and perhaps have a larger portion/guilt-free?

Happy Wednesday, peeps.

I love finding ways to health-ify bad food at home, especially baked goods- I am a baker, not a cook. Most of the time the healthy substitutions giev you the flavors and foods you are craving without the fat/calorie overload, but sometime I just have to go out and get the real thing, especially pizza!rnrnGreat post too! Being able to still have the “bad” food you love and want but in a healthier manner is one of the best ways to help lose/maintain weight and realize that living healthy is a lifestyle.rn

I’m salivating and it’s barely 8 a.m.! Although we do know that a lot of the foods you listed are heavy on calories, fat, etc., you really don’t know how bad until you do the research. It can be shocking.rnrnI tried VitaTops when I was in Florida and loved them, but haven’t been able to find them in the midwest :( Guess I just get to eat the cupcake then, right?

Yes, it definitely can be a surprise to learn how very bad things actually are!nnHaha, I guess you HAVE to eat the cupcake then ;) My local grocery store actually does carry VitaTops but I never buy them because they are never one sale and pretty dang expensive for one box. I wanna try ‘em though.

    You are Welcome! :)

I agree–healthy substitutions usually do give you the flavors (or just the idea that you’re getting the food) that you crave! And I agree with you about pizza, too :) Sometimes you just need the real thing!
