Today I thought I’d share a few of my favorite things in my house with you all. A nice change of pace from the normal talk, I hope
I have a lot of favorites but I decided to go with four things that have an interesting (well, sort of) story behind them… other than “I like it a lot”
As you know, Matt and I purchased a foreclosed home that needed a complete re-haul. Every single room in our house received new flooring and new paint, at the very least. When it came time, we also purchased brand new light fixtures for every light in the house, except the one in the kitchen (we aren’t sure what to do there). We got white plain flush-mounts for our bathrooms and brown plain flushmounts for our hallways, closets, and laundry room. But when it came to the downstairs hallway, I fell IN LOVE with the light (pictured above) and we splurged. It cost three times as much as one of the other flush mount lights but I thought it was awesome, it was a closeout and they only had one left. So we bought it and to this day (well, it was only a year and a half ago) it’s my favorite light. Worth every penny!
When Matt and I got our very first apartment together after just 3 or 4 months of knowing eachother, we were broke. We both worked part-time jobs and went to school and barely made ends meet. We bought a furniture set at Target and the table pictured (sort of) above in one of the pieces of the set we still have. We’ve since painted it but it reminds me of the days where we were broke. Kind of fun to think how far we’ve come! Woo hoo to no more Top Ramen! Atop that side table is a lamp we got as a wedding gift (which I love because of the ornate design), two horse book ends that my mom, sister, and I all have, and a few favorites: The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne and a book of stories and poems, including The Raven, by Edgar Allan Poe.
This wooden tray has been used for everything; a mail holder, a candle holder, an incense tray, and so much more! Right now it is holding candles; the four glass candles were sent to me as a gift from my surgeon to say Thank You and to make sure I was doing good. How nice is that?! I like them because they are soy (burn longer) and smell amazing.
Enough with the lights, huh?
Well, this isn’t my favorite light in the house but I love it now because of the drama of getting it up. Matt was at the top of a ladder, leaning against the entry way wall (Over ten feet up, maybe even fifteen?) attaching all the appropriate wires with one hand, leaning out, while I sat on the ledge and held the pendant. It took nearly an hour and a half to hang this baby and man, she was risky! But now I love it because its up, it works, and Matt didn’t hurt himself hanging it.
What are some of your favorite things in your house? Do they have a story?
